BREAK UP WITH STRESS
Its’ not me, it’s you …
Imagine you’re done with stress. You say "Look stress, I’ve had it, I’m done, c’ya.” And then you live happily ever after…*sigh*… if only it were true.
Despite our best efforts, we haven’t discovered a block button when it comes to stress. But we do have some tried and tested methods for dealing with it:
BREATHWORK
Yes, it sounds simple, but the simplest things are often the best! Deep breathing exercises can be done at anytime, anywhere. In fact, we’re doing it now! Just taking a moment to focus on your inhale and your exhale is beneficial. Relaxing into your body and feeling its sensory connections can reduce your heart rate and refresh your mind. A simple and subtle technique is to place your palms onto a flat surface and take a five second breath in and a five second breath out. Rinse and repeat.
MOVEMENT
Exercise and her chill little sister: movement are excellent ways to manage stress and anxiety. If a cross fit class is beyond your pay grade right now, just finding the motivation to move can still offer big dividends. Getting your body moving gets your blood flowing and activates the primal part of your brain, which can clear out brain fog and even help you sleep better.
REST
When it is all too much, take a break. We won’t judge you. You don’t need us to tell you where your happy place is, but we strongly suggest you go there for a quick mental getaway during times of high stress. Get a little fresh air. We promise when you come back you will have a renewed focus and will be better able to handle the load.
TAP INTO YOUR “HAPPY HORMONES”
Doing something you enjoy or something you are good at, even if it’s just for a few minutes, is the quickest way to stimulate your happy hormones and abate your stress levels. Your brain literally rewards you with the good stuff like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins when you are successful at a task. So if you’re feeling flat, find a moment to spend with an old faithful like:
- Walking
- Reading
- Playing with a pet
- Swimming
- Cooking
- Guided meditation
- Card games if you’re flying solo or board games if you can phone a friend
